Eminent litterateur Syed Shamsul Haq passed away at a hospital in the capital Tuesday afternoon. He was suffering from lung cancer.
Haq was an accomplished short-story writer, novelist, playwright and a very popular poet. He was born in 1935 in Kurigram.
He breathed his last at 5:26 this afternoon at United Hospital, hospital sources said.
The eminent litterateur was undergoing treatment at the Oncology department of the facility under Dr Ashim Kumar’s supervision.
He was admitted to the hospital on September 1 for treatment of liver and heart cancer and was shifted to its Incentive Care Unit (ICU) on Tuesday as his condition deteriorated.
President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina mourned the death of the eminent writer of the country.
The 81-year old writer won the Bangla Academy Award in 1966, Ekushey Padak in 1984 and Bangladesh’s highest civilian honour, Independence Award, in 2000 for his contribution to Bangla literature.
