Abdul Hamid has been re-elected the country's president for a second consecutive term.
"As no one else was running for the presidential position, the Election Commission (EC) is announcing M Abdul Hamid as the country's next president," Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Nurul Huda told a press conference at his office on Wednesday.
Earlier, Awami League (AL) nominated Abdul Hamid for his re-election as the country's president. Subsequently, Awami League Parliamentary Board (ALPB) with party President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair in a meeting finalised the nomination.
ALPB nominated Hamid for the presidency taking into account the current political situation, his long checkered political career and commitment to the country, AL General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader told a press briefing after the nomination.
A veteran politician, Abdul Hamid was born on 1 January, 1944 in Kamalpur of Mithamoin Upazila under Kishoregonj district. He was also elected president unanimously for his first tenure in April 2013.-BSS
