Bangladesh ODI skipper Mashrafe bin Mortaza has said that he is trying to bowl a semi-cross seam delivery which he believes will add variety to his bowling.
Mortaza had shown his ability with the ball in the recently concluded Dhaka Premier League, country’s list A tournament, by becoming the highest wicket taker with 39 wickets that helped his side Abahani Limited clinch the trophy.
In the process, he also rewrote the record books by overhauling pacer Abu Hider’s tally of 35 wickets, which was the previous highest in the tournament’s history.
Mortaza’s ability to perform at the highest level even at this stage of his career drew plenty of praise from all quarters. To concentrate fully on his bowling, the veteran even opted not to lead the side and was seen giving advice whenever needed to skipper Nasir Hossain.
“I have tried to bowl in a semi-cross seam position much like England’s Stuart Broad,” Mashrafee told reporters while analyzing his success.
“I worked with my wrist position like the way I always do. But for me the focal point was to learn some new tricks that would help me get a better result in flat wickets,” he added.
With pitches around the world becoming increasingly friendlier for batting in ODI cricket, Mortaza believes it was necessary to add to his repertoire.
“It was a flat wicket during the Champions Trophy and it would be the same in the next World Cup so felt that something new should be tried. I could grip the ball with seam-up and cross seam but this time I opted to see how it goes with semi-cross seam,” he said.
“Though I had planned it but watching TV and video helped me a lot. I had seen Stuart Broad bowl in this grip and tried to bowl following some of his grip positioning.
According to many batsmen who played him during the DPL, it was his length that had troubled them the most.
“I am a firm believer that if your length is ok you can get away unless it is a bad day,” Mortaza pointed out.
“After my pace got reduced all I did was concentrate on the length and now that has become one of my area of strength. I’m getting confident with the new grip that I have tried and hopefully will execute it during the international matches.”-Cricbuzz
