The Election Commission (EC) will start enrolment of Bangladeshi expatriates in voter list as soon as possible so that they can cast their votes in elections in the country.
In this regard, the commission will arrange a workshop on February 27 at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC) in Dhaka to receive suggestions and opinions from stakeholders, particularly diplomats stationed in countries that house a large number of Bangladeshis.
Some 100 participants, including top diplomats, officials at the Ministry of Expatriates Welfare and Overseas Employment, and other agencies concerned will be present at the event.
"We will take our next measures after receiving suggestions from the workshop," Election Commissioner Brig Gen (retd) Shahadat Hossain Chowdhury told BSS.
Though the commission has not yet fixed any timeline for implementing the initiative, it expects that the voter enrolment process can be launched by this year in some countries, he added.
The commission plans to start the voter enrolment process initially in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Malaysia - the three largest destinations of Bangladeshi expatriates.
"We are trying our best to introduce voter enrolment system for Bangladeshi expatriates in foreign countries as early as possible. We have already worked out technical matters," he said.
The EC has not confirmed whenever the new voters would cast their votes in the next election.
Over a crore Bangladeshi nationals is now living in 157 countries across the globe.-BSS
