Election Commission (EC) Acting Secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed on Wednesday said BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia's participation in the next election will depend on the country's Constitution and existing laws.
"The EC will take measures on the basis of the Constitution and laws in this regard. It has nothing to do with the matter whether Khaleda Zia could take part in the next polls or not," he told journalists at EC secretariat here this afternoon after a meeting of the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda with a European Union Parliamentary delegation.
Helal Uddin said, "The EU delegation wanted to know about the immediate past President election while the CEC informed them that usually the members of the parliament elect the President, but this year the President was elected unopposed as there was a lone candidate in the polls".
Jean Lambert led the eight-member European Union Parliamentary delegation at the meeting.
Joint Secretary of the EC SM Asaduzzaman was present in the meeting, among others.
BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia is currently in prison, after she was handed a five-year imprisonment for misappropriating a Tk 2.10 crore donation fund of Zia Orphanage Trust on February 8.-BSS
