The 53rd birthday anniversary of Sheikh Russel, the youngest son of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman will be observed on Wednesday.
On this day in 1964, Sheikh Russell, youngest brother of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, was born in the historic Bangabandhu Bhaban at Dhanmondi in Dhaka.
On the fateful night of August 15 in 1975, Sheikh Russell along with most of the family members of Bangabandhu was killed by the enemies of humanity. He was a student of class IV at University Laboratory School.
The ruling Awami League (AL), its associate and like-minded bodies and socio-cultural organisations have chalked out elaborate programmes to observe the birthday.
Leaders and workers of AL will place wreaths at the graves of those massacred on August 15, 1975 including Sheikh Russell at the Banani graveyard at 8 am and offer fateha (special prayers) at their graves and take part in a milad and doa mahfil there.
In a statement today, AL General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader urged all, including party leaders, activists, supporters and well-wishers, to observe the birthday of Sheikh Russell in a befitting manner.
He also urged all party units across the country to celebrate the day through organising similar programmes.-BSS
