There will be no gas crisis in the country from next year as the government has been planning to import liquefied natural gas (LNG) to meet the increasing demand of gas, said Prime Minister's Energy Affairs Adviser Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury.
"Nearly 50 crore cubic feet (cft) of liquefied natural gas (LNG) will be imported everyday from the beginning of next year and an additional 50 crore cft by mid-2018," said the adviser while speaking at the 3rd quarterly launching meeting of Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) at Motijheel Chamber Bhaban here.
The supply of gas will witness a 37 percent rise but the price of it will increase, he said and urged the businesspeople to take preparation for it from now. But he assured that necessary steps will be taken to keep the price of LNG stable and within the purchasing power.
MCCI president Nihad Kabir presided over the meeting. She said depletion of gas reserves is one of the biggest hurdles that the businesspeople are currently facing. Bangladesh is planning to use LNG in vast quantities over the next decades but it is costly and will lead to some price shock.
She suggested taking steps by the government to form public opinion and acceptability about it beforehand.
Former presidents of MCCI Laila Rahman Kabir, Tapan Chowdhury, Syed Nasim Manzur, chairman of Association of Bankers Bangladesh Anis A Khan, former president of Bangladesh Employers' Federation Kamran T Rahman and former president of Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) Asif Ibrahim were present at the meeting.
In the concluding remarks, Syed Nasim Manzur said that businesspeople can take the country ahead if the supply of gas and electricity is ensured by the government.-BSS
