The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) on Wednesday said no foreign movies apart from those made under joint production will be allowed to be screened in the country during festivals like Eid, Pujo or Pohela Baisakh.
A three-member Appellate Division bench headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain passed the order after holding hearing on an appeal filed by the cinema hall owners against a High Court order.
Earlier on May 10, the High Court passed an order saying no foreign movies will be allowed to be screened during festival time. Hall owners then filed an appeal against the order, and the apex court today came up with the order on that.
“President of Bangladesh Film Exhibitors’ Association had filed an appeal against the High Court order. After holding hearing on that, the apex court today modified the High Court order a bit, paving the way for screening movies made under joint production,” said advocate Moniruzzaman, who stood for the writ before the court.
Earlier the High Court had also issued a rule, asking authorities concerned to explain in four weeks as to why it shall not declare illegal the releasing of foreign movies during festivals in the country.-BSS
