HC orders for realizing revenue from Google, facebook, You Tube

The High Court on Thursday issued an order asking the concern authorities of government to realize value added tax (VAT) or tax from Google, facebook and You Tube, electronic commerce and cloud computing company Amazon.
A HC division bench comprising Justice Md Moinul Islam Chowdhury and Justice Md Ashraful Kamal passed the interim verdict following a writ petition filed by six HC lawyers against those institutions for alleged revenue evasion on April 9 last.
The court also issued a rule asking concerned authorities to show causes why directives should not be given to realize revenue from those institutions.
Secretaries of finance, law, posts and telecommunication, information ministries, Bangladesh Bank governor, National Board of Revenue (NBR) chairman, Bangladesh Telecom Regulatory Commission (BTRC) chairman and other concerned have been asked to respond to the HC rule by four weeks next.
Deputy Attorney General Motahar Hossain Saju told BSS that the HC asked to realize VAT or tax immediately from the institutions those are making profit from digital advertizing sector.
Besides, he said, the court also asked authorities concerned to form a committee of experts to this end. The committee has also been asked to submit report at the court by June 25 next on how many profit earned and being earned by the due institutions, the deputy attorney general said.
Barrister Mohammad Humayun Kabir Pallab moved for the petitioners in the court while Deputy Attorney General Motahar Hossain Sazu appeared for the state.-BSS
