Central Bank gives BB Award to Dr Azizur Rahman and Dr Mahbub Hossain

The Central Bank today handed over Bangladesh Bank Award 2017 to the country's two renowned economists- Dr Azizur Rahman Khan and late Dr Mahbub Hossain- for their outstanding contributions to the field of economy.
Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith formally handed over the awards as the chief guest to Dr Azizur Rahman Khan and Parvin Hossain, wife of late Dr Mahbub Hossain, at a simple ceremony at the Bangladesh Institute of Bank Management (BIBM) auditorium in the capital's Mirpur area.
Each of the award carries Taka two lakh, a crest and a gold medal.
Bangladesh Bank Governor Fazle Kabir read out the citations of the awardees at the programme while Director General of BIBM Dr Tawfique Ahmed Chowdhury delivered the welcome address.
Chief of the Bangladesh Bank Award 2017 selection panel and PKSF Chairman Dr Qazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmad also spoke.
In his speech, the Finance Minister said this was a happy occasion for him to hand over such awards to two of the country's renowned economists.
Talking about Dr Azizur Rahman Khan, Prof Emeratus of Department of Economics of University of California, Riverside, Muhith said Azizur had always been a perfectionist since his early days of life.
About Dr Mahbub Hossain, who worked at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) and lately as the executive Director of Brac, the Finance Minister said Mahbub was always so much dedicated to his researches, works and learning.
"But, Mahbub left us too early as he had a lot to deliver to the nation," added Muhith.
After receiving the award, Dr Azizur Rahman Khan touched upon various aspects of economics highlighting the lives and livelihoods of the people of the world especially of the people of the developing countries.
"The year 2017 has been the best year in terms of human wellbeing and it is also for our country," he added.
Dr Azizur Rahman Khan later handed over the amount of his Award to an organization 'Utso Bangladesh' working for the marginalized women.
AFM Faruk Hossain, younger brother of late Dr Mahbub Hossain, also expressed his feelings on the occasion.
Speaking on the occasion, Bangladesh Bank Governor Fazle Kabir said both Dr Azizur and Dr Mahbub jointly edited a book in 1979 titled 'Development Strategy for Bangladesh' which was a very timely publication of that time.
The Central Bank Governor also underscored the need for transforming country's huge Human Resources into skilled work force side by side attracting more local and foreign investments to further expedite the country's development.
Dr Azizur completed B.A. Honors and M.A. in Economics at the University of Dhaka having first class in both.
He was also placed first in order of merit in M.A. examination (1959) for which he received a special Presidential Award.
Later, Azizur did his Ph.D. in Economics at Cambridge University, 1966.
In a life filled with brilliance, eminent economist Dr Mahbub also served as head of social science division of International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) and director general of Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS).-BSS
