Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the US's Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to reopen the long-awaited Dhaka-New York flight of Biman Bangladesh Airlines.

"Under the MOU, a FAA delegation will visit Dhaka this month for conducting initial technical evaluation in this regard," CAAB spokesperson AKM Rezaul Karim told BSS on Thursday.

He termed the MOU as a starting process of reopening the Dhaka-New York flight of the national flag carrier that has been suspended since 1996. The MOU was signed between CAAB and FAA during the 54th Director General Civil Aviation (DGCA) conference of Asia and Pacific region held from August 7-11 at Mongolian capital Ulaanbaatar.

CAAB Chairman Air Vice Marshal Ehsanul Gani led the Bangladesh delegation that was also included CAAB Flight Safety and Regulations (FSR) Director Wing Commander Chowdhury M Ziaul Kabir.

On the sideline of the conference, the Bangladesh delegation also held a meeting with the UK's Civil Aviation Authority and discussed about automation of pilot licensing process and examination as well as airworthiness licensing process and examination.

"A delegation of the UK Civil Aviation Authority will visit Dhaka soon in this regard," Karim said.

Besides, the CAAB delegation held a meeting with Technical Cooperation Bureau (TCB) of International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) to discuss the progress of ongoing Separation and Regulator Bureau project.

The CAAB delegation also finalised the project planning of a safety related modern initiative styled - Advance Passenger Information Service (APIS).

"The TCB agreed to provide all technical cooperation to the CAAB for implementing the project and a two-member technical team of ICAO will visit Bangladesh in this regard," he added.

At the meeting, ICAO selected Bangladesh as the host of 57th DGCA conference in 2020, CAAB official sources said. -BSS
