The 89th birth anniversary of eminent poet Shamsur Rahman was observed here in a befitting manner on Monday.
Different socio-cultural organisations chalked up elaborate programmes, including placing of wreaths at his grave at Banani, discussions, recitation sessions and musical soirees.
Bangla Academy organized a discussion titled 'Shamsur Rahmaner Kobitar Desh' at its Shamsur Rahman Seminar Room in the afternoon.
Director General of Bangla Academy Professor Shamsuzzaman Khan chaired the discussion while Dr Tareque Reza, professor of Jahangirnagar University presented the keynote paper.
Professor Begum Akthar Kamal and Dr Anu Hossain addressed the discussion while writers Anwar Syed Haq and Dr Ali Asgar and poet Kazi Rozy were present, among others.
His poems largely feature the struggle of country's people for Independence and Liberation War.
'Barnomala Amar Dukhini Barnomala', 'Asader Shirt', 'Tomake Pawar Jonno Hey Swadhinata' and 'Udbhat Uter Pithe Cholechhe Swadesh' are some his works depicting various aspects of national transitions at different times.
The number of books by poet Shamsur Rahman which were published in his lifetime is 98, including four novels, 67 of poems, one of short story, two of child literature and six translations.
He made his professional debut as a journalist of the daily Morning Sun in 1957 and later he worked for Dainik Bangla (now defunct), where he also served as its chief editor.-BSS
