A gold lunch box along with a cup and a saucer used by the Nizam of Hyderabad in India were reportedly stolen from the Nizam’s museum located in the Purani Haveli Palace in the Old City on Sunday night.

The theft was noticed when the museum opened on Monday morning.

The police said thieves gained entry into the museum after breaking an iron grill on the ground floor and walked away with the three items weighing about 2 kg.

Not ruling out the involvement of an insider, Hyderabad Police Commissioner Anjani Kumar said it appeared the thief was familiar with the museum layout.

Opening daily from 10 am to 5 pm, the museum showcases gifts received by the last Nizam, Osman Ali Khan, on his silver jubilee celebrations in 1936. It displays silver models of all the landmark buildings in Hyderabad.

A 1930 Rolls Royce, Packard and a Jaguar Mark V are among the vintage cars on display. Other attractions include the wardrobe of the sixth Nizam and a 150-year-old manually operated lift.

Police sources said stolen historical goods are rarely recovered as these find their way into collectors’ market in western nations. -The Tribune
